PARAGRAPH 9

We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.

  • Genesis 12:2-3.  And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:  And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

  • Esther 5:1.  Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, over against the king’s house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.  And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favour in his sight: and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.  Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.

  • Joshua 23:8-10.  But cleave unto the Lord your God, as ye have done unto this day.  For the Lord hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.  One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the Lord your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you."

  • Deuteronomy 29:10.  Ye stand this day all of you before the Lord your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel.

  • Matthew 5:16.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

  • Acts 5:20.  Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:15.  Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

  • Acts 26:1-3,6.  Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself: I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews: Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.  And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:

  • 3 Nephi 6:20.  And there began to be men inspired from heaven and sent forth, standing among the people in all the land, preaching and testifying boldly.

  • 3 Nephi 18:21.  Pray in your families unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and your children may be blessed.

  • 3 Ne. 1:4. The prophecies of the prophets began to be fulfilled more fully; for there began to be greater signs and greater miracles wrought among the people.

  • D&C 52:36.  Let them labor with their families, declaring none other things than the prophets and apostles, that which they have seen and heard and most assuredly believe, that the prophecies may be fulfilled.

  • D&C 134:4-5,7.  We believe that religion is instituted of God; and that men are amenable to him, and to him only, for the exercise of it, unless their religious opinions prompt them to infringe upon the rights and liberties of others; but we do not believe that human law has a right to interfere in prescribing rules of worship to bind the consciences of men, nor dictate forms for public or private devotion; that the civil magistrate should restrain crime, but never control conscience; should punish guilt, but never suppress the freedom of the soul.  We believe that all men are bound to sustain and uphold the respective governments in which they reside, while protected in their inherent and inalienable rights by the laws of such governments; and that sedition and rebellion are unbecoming every citizen thus protected, and should be punished accordingly; and that all governments have a right to enact such laws as in their own judgments are best calculated to secure the public interest; at the same time, however, holding sacred the freedom of conscience. We believe that rulers, states, and governments have a right, and are bound to enact laws for the protection of all citizens in the free exercise of their religious belief; but we do not believe that they have a right in justice to deprive citizens of this privilege, or proscribe them in their opinions, so long as a regard and reverence are shown to the laws and such religious opinions do not justify sedition nor conspiracy.
